Colonel Montgomery Gilbreath was a key figure in local history, serving as probate judge of Marshall County from 1850 to 1862 before joining the Confederacy. His leadership and standing within the community are believed to have played a role in the house being spared when Union forces invaded Guntersville in 1865. Legend says that Colonel Gilbreath, along with other leading men of the town, pleaded with Federal officers to spare the city from destruction. The house was one of only seven buildings left standing amidst the devastation. The Guntersville Historical Society purchased the house in 2001 and has meticulously preserved its historical character.
