Gorham's Bluff: A Step Back in Time

Gorham's Bluff, a hidden gem in Jackson County, Alabama, offers visitors a chance to experience a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Located atop Sand Mountain, approximately 5 miles northeast of Pisgah, the bluff overlooks the Raccoon Creek area of the Tennessee River, providing breathtaking panoramic views. The story of Gorham's Bluff begins in 1892 when W.B. "Uncle Billy" Gorham, a Confederate veteran, was deeded eighty acres of land by the U.S. Government. He built a remote lean-to shack for his family; however, the isolation proved too much for them, and they eventually returned to the valley. Uncle Billy remained, spending his days growing strawberries, playing his fiddle, and living off his soldier's pension. In the early 1990s, Dawn and Alan McGriff envisioned a planned community that would seamlessly blend history, culture, and architecture. Partnering with real estate agent Chris Kent and architect Lloyd Vogt, they began to develop Gorham's Bluff into the charming town it is today. The first structure was completed in 1993, marking the beginning of a community that respects and preserves the native landscape, celebrates creativity, and fosters connection. Today, Gorham's Bluff features a variety of attractions and amenities. The Lodge at Gorham's Bluff, a beautifully appointed bed and breakfast, offers comfortable accommodations and stunning views. The Meeting House, a repurposed 1938 Pisgah High School building, serves as a community arts and activities center, hosting meetings, performances, and workshops. Visitors can explore the walking trails that wind along the bluff, offering picturesque views of the Tennessee River Valley and the surrounding landscape.
