Tucked away on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama, the Ave Maria Grotto, also known as "Jerusalem in Miniature," is a captivating display of artistry and faith. This unique park features 125 miniature replicas of famous religious structures, historical landmarks, and shrines from around the world.The grotto is the lifelong work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk who immigrated from Bavaria, Germany, in 1892. Over nearly 50 years, he meticulously constructed the miniatures using stone, concrete, and various donated materials such as broken plates, seashells, marbles, and jewelry. His creations reflect his passion for art, architecture, and his deep spiritual devotion.Visitors can wander through the landscaped hillside, discovering intricate miniatures of iconic sites such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Tower of Babel, and various scenes from the Holy Land. The Ave Maria Grotto itself, a shrine to the Virgin Mary, serves as the centerpiece of the collection. The attention to detail and the creative use of materials make each miniature a unique work of art.The grotto opened in 1934 on the site of a former stone quarry used by the Abbey. Brother Joseph continued to add to the grotto until 1958, with his last creation being a miniature of the Lourdes Basilica Church. Brother Joseph gathered ideas for his work from extensive readings of history and the Bible, as well as his own imagination. He passed away in 1961 and is buried in the Abbey Cemetery, near the Grotto.The Ave Maria Grotto offers a peaceful and inspiring experience for visitors of all backgrounds.
