Originally known as Bat Cave, Jacob Gurley opened the cave to the public in the 1950s, renaming it Cathedral Caverns due to its awe-inspiring, cathedral-like appearance.Acquired by the state in 1987 and opened as a state park in 2000, Cathedral Caverns boasts one of the largest commercial cave entrances globally, measuring an impressive 126 feet wide and 25 feet high. Inside, you'll encounter stunning formations, including Goliath, a colossal stalagmite standing 45 feet tall with a circumference of 243 feet. Other highlights include the Frozen Waterfall, a massive flowstone formation resembling a frozen cascade, and the Stalagmite Forest, an area filled with countless stalactites.The cave maintains a comfortable 60-degree temperature year-round, making it an ideal destination regardless of the season. Beyond the cave, the 493-acre park offers marked hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts and gemstone mining, a popular activity for all ages where you can sift through mining dirt to discover rough-cut gemstones and fossils.Cathedral Caverns also provides camping facilities, including improved campsites, primitive tent camping areas, and cozy cabins.
