Discover more about Council Bluff School

Nestled near the top of Sand Mountain, close to Valley Head, Alabama, the Council Bluff School is a preserved piece of history. Built in 1903, this one-room schoolhouse served as a vital center for the community's educational pursuits. The land was donated by prominent local figures, with Mr. Sam Cordell driving the first nail. In 1924, Council Bluff consolidated with other nearby schools to form a larger institution at High Point, though a subsequent attempt to reverse this decision was unsuccessful. After its period as an active school, Council Bluff continued to serve the community as a gathering place for sacred harp singings and school reunions. Thanks to the efforts of Landmarks of DeKalb County, Alabama, the school has been preserved, offering visitors a tangible connection to the past. Today, the Council Bluff School is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Restoration efforts are ongoing, with a new roof recently installed. Visitors can explore the grounds and imagine a time when this simple building was the heart of education for local children. A geocache is also located at the site.
