Discover more about Washington Square Park

Washington Square Park, located in the Oakleigh Garden District of Mobile, Alabama, is a beloved green space with a rich history. Archibald Gordon, a prominent businessman, donated the land to the city in 1850, stipulating that it be used as a public promenade. The park quickly became a focal point for the surrounding neighborhood, which boasts some of the finest examples of 19th-century architecture in Mobile. The park's design reflects the changing times. Originally enclosed by a wooden picket fence to keep out roaming cattle, it later received concrete sidewalks and a central concrete basin when the city developed a water system. A cast-iron deer statue, relocated from Bienville Square, became a cherished feature, delighting countless children. Today, Washington Square Park continues to be a vibrant center of neighborhood activity. Its beautiful live oaks, flowers, and shrubbery provide a tranquil setting for relaxation and recreation. The park also serves as a gathering place for community events, fostering a strong sense of Southern charm and community. Visitors can stroll along the walkways, admire the historic homes that surround the square, and soak in the atmosphere of this well-preserved historic district.
