The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, an architectural icon of the Old South, stands as a testament to a time of gracious living. Built in 1855 by Judge John Bragg, this 13,000-square-foot Greek Revival mansion was designed to host Mobile's lively social season from Thanksgiving through Mardi Gras. The mansion features massive double parlors, a circular staircase, and rooms built on a grand scale, furnished with fine antiques and crystal chandeliers.During the Civil War, the property saw the cutting of its live oak trees for Confederate defenses and the removal of its furnishings to a plantation in Lowndes County, which was later burned. The mansion remained in the Bragg family until 1880 and later became an icon of Mobile under the ownership of the A.S. Mitchell family. In the late 1970s, it was generously donated to the Explore Center, which restored it to its antebellum grandeur.Today, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion operates as a historic house museum and event center, offering guided tours that delve into the history, architecture, and stories behind the mansion. The meticulously landscaped grounds feature centuries-old oak trees draped with Spanish moss and vibrant azaleas, creating a serene and picturesque setting.
