Discover more about Cathedral Square

Cathedral Square, located in downtown Mobile, Alabama, is more than just a park; it's a living testament to the city's layered history and enduring spirit. Situated at 300 Conti Street, the square occupies a central location bordered by North Claiborne, Dauphin, North Jackson, and Conti Streets, making it easily accessible and a focal point for both locals and tourists. Originally, this very ground served as part of Mobile's 18th-century Catholic cemetery, known as Campo Santo. Established by French colonists, Campo Santo served as the final resting place for Mobile's early settlers. The cemetery spanned approximately 400 feet by 300 feet, encompassing portions of several city blocks. In 1819, as Mobile expanded, most of the burials were relocated to the new Church Street Graveyard. However, remnants of the past occasionally resurfaced, with graves being unearthed along Conti Street as late as the 1890s. Following the cemetery's relocation, the area evolved into a bustling commercial district filled with various buildings. These structures stood for decades until 1979 when they were demolished to create a public park facing the majestic Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The current park layout was implemented in 1996, transforming the space into the inviting and aesthetically pleasing destination it is today. The park features a layout that mirrors the neighboring Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The brick sidewalks echo the walls and nave of the cathedral, while a semicircular colonnade featuring fountains mirrors the apse. This mirroring effect enhances the visual appeal and creates a sense of unity between the park and the cathedral, making it a unique and memorable space. Throughout the year, Cathedral Square comes alive with a variety of events and activities. From art shows and live music to seasonal festivals and community gatherings, the square serves as a social hub for Mobile.
