Bragg-Mitchell Mansion: A Glimpse into the Old South
Step back in time at Mobile's Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture and a window into the Old South.
The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, located in the Oakleigh Garden District of Mobile, Alabama, is a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture. Built in 1855 for Judge John Bragg, the 13,000-square-foot mansion was designed to be the family's home and a center for Mobile's vibrant social life. The mansion is canopied by century-old oaks and furnished with antiques and crystal chandeliers. The mansion's history is intertwined with the Civil War. In anticipation of Union troops, the live oak trees on the property were cut down to provide Confederate defenders a clear line of fire. The home's furnishings were also removed and sent to a plantation owned by Bragg in Lowndes County. The house remained in the Bragg family until 1880 and was passed through multiple owners before becoming a historic house museum. Today, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion offers guided tours, allowing visitors to explore its double parlors, lavish dining room, and grounds adorned with live oaks and azaleas. The mansion is also a popular venue for weddings, receptions, and corporate events.
