Bragg-Mitchell Mansion: A Glimpse into Mobile's Antebellum Past

The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, located on SpringHill Avenue in Mobile, Alabama, is a historic house museum that embodies the grandeur of the Old South. Built in 1855 by Judge John Bragg, this 13,000-square-foot Greek Revival mansion served as the family's winter residence during Mobile's bustling social season. The mansion boasts a striking exterior with its sixteen white, fluted columns supporting a three-sided veranda. Inside, visitors are transported to a bygone era with double parlors, a lavish dining room, a circular staircase, and rooms adorned with fine antiques and crystal chandeliers. The meticulous restoration efforts showcase the lifestyles of the families who once called this place home. Throughout its history, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion has been a silent witness to significant events. During the Civil War, the live oak trees on the property were cut down for Confederate defenses, and the furnishings were moved to a plantation for safekeeping. The mansion remained in the Bragg family until 1880 and later passed through several owners before being donated to the Explore Center in the late 1970s. Recognizing its historical significance, the Explore Center restored the mansion and opened it to the public as a museum in 1987.
