The architectural styles found within Old Dauphin Way reflect the changing tastes and trends of the 19th and 20th centuries.At the heart of Monterey Place stands the Shepard House, a Queen Anne residence designed in 1897 by architect George Franklin Barber. Commissioned by Charles Martin Shepard, the general passenger agent for the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, the house exemplifies the opulence of the late Victorian era. Its Queen Anne details, including intricate woodwork, multiple gables, and a turret, showcase the craftsmanship of the time. Inside, eleven fireplaces add warmth, while stained-glass windows cast colorful patterns.The house has been a bed and breakfast, offering a chance to experience history firsthand.
