Opened in November 1940 as the Admiral Semmes Hotel, named after Confederate Admiral Raphael Semmes, the hotel quickly became a prominent fixture in Mobile. The 12-story building was constructed in just 15 months at a cost of $1 million and was the first hotel in Mobile to offer air conditioning and telephones in every guest room.The hotel thrived throughout the mid-20th century, hosting notable figures and events. Singer Jimmy Buffett performed regularly at the hotel's Admiral's Corner Lounge in the late 1960s and 1970s. The hotel closed in 1978 and was converted into a retirement home before being damaged by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. It was restored and reopened in 1985 as the Radisson Admiral Semmes Hotel.In recent years, The Admiral has undergone further renovations, blending classic elegance with modern luxury. The hotel features 156 rooms, Le Moyne's Chophouse, The Living Room bar, and a cafe.
