Tolstoy Park, also called the Henry Stuart House or the Hermit House, offers a glimpse into the life of Henry Stuart, an Englishman who sought a simpler existence in Fairhope, Alabama. Diagnosed with tuberculosis, Stuart moved from Idaho in 1923 and built this unique round house in 1925, drawing inspiration from the writings of Leo Tolstoy. The house, constructed with hand-made concrete blocks, is a 14-foot diameter structure designed to withstand hurricanes. Its walls are set partially underground to maintain a stable interior temperature. Stuart lived a self-sufficient life, growing his own food and weaving rugs. He became known as the 'Hermit of Montrose' and welcomed visitors, keeping a guestbook with over 1,200 names, including Clarence Darrow. Today, Tolstoy Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While the surrounding land has been developed into an office complex, the Hermit Hut remains open to visitors. Inside, visitors can still sign a guestbook and experience the unique acoustics of the round room. Efforts are underway to relocate the structure to the Flying Creek Nature Preserve in 2025, which will provide a more fitting natural setting. This move aims to allow visitors to experience it in a natural environment that reflects Stuart's love of nature. The story of Henry Stuart has inspired many, including Sonny Brewer, whose novel 'The Poet of Tolstoy Park' tells a fictionalized account of Stuart's life.
