The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, an architectural icon of the Old South, stands as a testament to Mobile's rich history. Built in 1855 by Judge John Bragg, this 13,000-square-foot Greek Revival mansion was designed to be the center of the family's social life during Mobile's vibrant season from Thanksgiving through Mardi Gras. The mansion is known as one of the most photographed buildings in Mobile.The mansion features a symmetrical layout, tall columns, and a bracketed cornice, blending Greek Revival and Italianate elements. Inside, visitors can admire the grand scale of the rooms, furnished with fine antiques and crystal chandeliers. The house has fourteen rooms, with seven bedrooms and 15-foot ceilings on the ground floor.Throughout its history, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion has been owned by several prominent families. It was generously donated to the Explore Center by the A.S. Mitchell foundation in the late 1970s. It reopened to the public in 1987 as a historic house museum and event center. Today, the mansion hosts guided historic tours and is available for weddings, receptions, and corporate functions.
