Bragg-Mitchell Mansion: A Glimpse into the Old South

The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, located in the Oakleigh Garden District of Mobile, Alabama, is a beautifully preserved antebellum home that offers a glimpse into the opulence and complex history of the Old South. Constructed in 1855 by Judge John Bragg, it quickly became a focal point of Mobile's vibrant social scene. The mansion is a prime example of Greek Revival architecture, with its imposing columns, symmetrical facade, and intricate detailing.The 13,000-square-foot interior boasts grand double parlors, a sweeping circular staircase, and exquisitely decorated rooms that reflect the refined tastes of the era. Furnished with fine antiques and crystal chandeliers, the mansion offers a rare glimpse of life in the Old South. The house remained in the Bragg family until 1880, then passed through a variety of hands before the last private owner purchased it in 1931. The Mitchell family occupied the Mansion until 1965 and significantly contributed to its preservation. In the late 1970s, the A.S. Mitchell foundation generously donated the mansion to the Explore Center to create an interactive science museum. However, recognizing the historical significance of the building, the Explore Center chose to construct a separate facility and instead dedicated themselves to restoring the mansion to its antebellum grandeur.Today, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion is a historic house museum offering guided tours. As one of the most photographed buildings in Mobile, it is an architectural icon representing the Old South. The mansion is available for weddings, receptions, parties, and corporate functions.
