The North Building and the Connector were added in 1904. For decades, the mill operated as a vital manufacturing hub, producing textiles that supplied the nation. However, economic shifts led to its closure in 1932, followed by a brief reopening and subsequent conversion into a cotton warehouse in 1937. From 1945 to 1978, it was transformed into a shoe factory, even producing combat boots for US soldiers during the Vietnam War.After a period of serving as a warehouse, the property was purchased by Jim Hudson with a vision to create an artist's collective, inspired by the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Virginia. Today, Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment is the largest privately-owned arts facility in the Southern United States.
