4.3

The Alabama Governor's Mansion, located in Montgomery's historic Garden District, is more than just a residence; it's a symbol of Alabama's history, culture, and leadership. This Neoclassical Revival mansion, designed in 1907 by architect Weatherly Carter, originally served as the home of Robert Fulwood Ligon, Jr., before being purchased by the state in 1950. For almost a century before the mansion was established, Alabama's governors resided in private homes or hotels during their time in office. The current mansion replaced the first executive mansion in 1950. The first governor to reside in the newly renovated mansion was Governor Gordon Persons, who moved in on his inauguration day in 1951. Since then, the mansion has been home to numerous Alabama governors and their families, each leaving their mark on the historic residence. Visitors can explore the mansion's main floor and grounds through free guided tours offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Knowledgeable guides share stories about the mansion's history, architecture, and the families who have called it home. The Reception Hall welcomes visitors with its grand staircase, elaborate woodwork, and oak floors. A French crystal chandelier, originally from the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans, adds a touch of opulence to the space. The mansion also hosts special events throughout the year, including the popular Holiday Candlelight Tours in December.
