McBryde-Screws-Tyson House: A Greek Revival Gem

The McBryde-Screws-Tyson House, also known as the Tyson House, is a historic residence located at 333 Mildred Street in Montgomery, Alabama. This Greek Revival-style house, completed in 1832 with a significant facade addition in 1855, is one of the city's best-preserved examples of Greek Revival architecture. It earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places on November 28, 1980.The two-story frame building showcases six-over-six windows, all shuttered, and four exterior brick chimneys. A small balcony with a turned wooden balustrade is centered above the main entrance. To the east side of the house is a one-story open porch with fretwork trim and balustrade, believed to be an addition from the 1890s. The rear of the house features a two-story latticed porch with exterior stairs. The McBryde-Screws-Tyson House is set back from the street on a slight elevation, at the end of Goldthwaite Street where it intersects with Mildred Street.The house's history is intertwined with the lives of several prominent Montgomery families. Originally constructed in the 1850s by Ann McBryde, widow of Dr. Andrew McBryde. In 1885, Mrs. Thiess sold her home to William Wallace Screws. In 1890, Screws sold the house to John Caius Tyson. Today, the McBryde-Screws-Tyson House remains a private residence, a reminder of Montgomery's past.
