Discover more about The Legacy Museum

The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration, situated in Montgomery, Alabama, offers a powerful and immersive journey through the history of racial inequality in America. Built on the site of a former cotton warehouse where enslaved Black people were forced to labor, the museum connects the history of slavery to the present-day issues of mass incarceration and police violence. The museum utilizes interactive media, first-person narratives, and data-rich exhibits to tell the story of slavery, segregation, and racial terror lynchings. Visitors encounter replicas of slave pens and experience the sights and sounds of imprisonment, offering a sobering glimpse into the lives of enslaved people awaiting auction. The museum also presents extensive research on lynchings and the dehumanizing effects of Jim Crow laws, linking this history to current social issues. The Legacy Museum is operated by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), a non-profit organization founded by Bryan Stevenson. In 2021, the Legacy Museum expanded to a new location five times the size of the original, now occupying a 47,000-square-foot building. The expansion incorporates modern technology, historical research, and world-class art to further explore slavery and its lasting influence.
