During this time, Orville Wright personally oversaw the training of several students, including Walter Brookins, who made history with the first night flight in Montgomery. Maxwell Air Force Base has a rich history of its own, having served as a repair facility during World War I and later as a training facility for aviation cadets during World War II. In 1946, Air University was established there, solidifying the base's role in aviation education and research.
