Wright Brothers Park: A Tribute to Aviation History

Wright Brothers Park, formerly known as Overlook Park, is a charming urban oasis in Montgomery, Alabama, offering stunning views of the Alabama River and a unique connection to aviation history. This park is more than just a scenic spot; it commemorates the Wright brothers' pioneering venture into flight and their short but significant time in Montgomery. In early 1910, Wilbur and Orville Wright established the nation's first civilian flying school on what was then a cotton plantation on the outskirts of Montgomery. The city's mild climate and flat farmland made it an ideal location for their endeavor. The Commercial Club of Montgomery, recognizing the potential publicity and economic benefits, supported the project by constructing a hangar and making improvements to the flying field. Although the Wright Brothers Flying School was short-lived, operating for only a few months, it holds a special place in aviation history. During this time, Orville Wright personally oversaw the training of several students, including Walter Brookins, who made history with the first night flight in Montgomery. The school's closure was attributed to mechanical issues and unfavorable weather conditions, but its legacy endures. The park itself features several amenities for visitors to enjoy. Picnic shelters with off-street parking provide a pleasant setting for family outings and gatherings. One of the park's most notable features is the full-scale replica of the Wright Flyer, which was installed in June 2013. The park's location on Maxwell Boulevard, near Maxwell Air Force Base, further enhances its connection to aviation history. Maxwell Air Force Base has a rich history of its own, having served as a repair facility during World War I and later as a training facility for aviation cadets during World War II. In 1946, Air University was established there, solidifying the base's role in aviation education and research. Today, Wright Brothers Park stands as a testament to Montgomery's role in the early days of aviation and a tribute to the Wright brothers' pioneering spirit.
