Discover more about Moundville Archaeological Park

Moundville Archaeological Park, located on the Black Warrior River near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, preserves the remarkable legacy of a once-thriving Mississippian culture. From approximately A.D. 1000 to 1450, this site served as a major political, social, and religious center, second only to Cahokia in Illinois. Known as the "Big Apple of the 14th Century" by National Geographic, Moundville was at its peak, the largest city in America, north of Mexico. The park encompasses 326 acres and features 29 impressive platform mounds arranged around a vast central plaza. These mounds served as elevated foundations for civic and ceremonial structures, as well as the homes of the society's elite. Visitors can climb to the top of some mounds, including Mound B, the park's tallest, for panoramic views of the complex. The Jones Archaeological Museum displays over 200 artifacts unearthed at the site, providing insights into the daily lives, beliefs, and artistic achievements of the Mississippian people. Life-size figures dressed in traditional clothing and jewelry offer a vivid representation of this ancient culture. A reconstructed village allows visitors to step back in time and experience the living conditions of Moundville's inhabitants. Beyond the mounds and museum, the park offers a half-mile nature trail that winds through scenic old-growth hardwood forests, picnic areas, and picturesque views of the Black Warrior River. Moundville is also a featured birding site on the Alabama Birding Trails.
