Clarkson Covered Bridge, North Alabama Travel Guide

Nestled in Cullman County, Alabama, the Clarkson Covered Bridge stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering and the enduring appeal of covered bridges. Constructed in 1904, the bridge, also known as Legg Bridge, was built over Crooked Creek on land owned by James W. Legg, a local mail carrier. He recognized the need for improved transportation in the area. The bridge cost $1,500 at the time.The 270-foot bridge is a Town lattice truss construction. It served as a vital transportation link for farmers and residents crossing Crooked Creek. A flood in 1921 destroyed half of the bridge, but the pieces were recovered and rebuilt the following year, also at a cost of $1,500. The bridge remained open to motor traffic until 1962 when a nearby concrete bridge replaced it.In 1975, as part of the American Bicentennial Project, the Cullman County Commission restored the bridge and created Clarkson Covered Bridge Park. The park includes a gristmill and a log cabin. Today, the park offers walking trails, picnic areas, and a serene atmosphere. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 1974. The park is open from 7 AM to 7 PM. Admission is free.
