Flagg Mountain Tower: Southernmost Appalachian Landmark

Flagg Mountain Tower, standing proudly in Weogufka State Forest, marks the southernmost peak of the Appalachian Mountain range exceeding 1,000 feet. At 1,152 feet, this historic site offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance.Constructed in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the 50-foot stone tower served as a fire lookout until 1989. The tower's unique construction features thick stone walls reinforced with a crisscross pattern of timbers. Although originally intended to be the centerpiece of Weogufka State Park, the park plans were never fully realized due to the advent of World War II.Today, Flagg Mountain is a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts. The mountain marks the southern terminus of the 330-mile Pinhoti Trail, which connects to the Appalachian Trail in north Georgia. Visitors can explore over seven miles of interconnected trails, including a half-mile ADA-accessible path. The tower itself has been renovated, allowing visitors to climb to the top and enjoy stunning 360-degree views of the Coosa and Tallapoosa River valleys and the Talladega Mountain range.Flagg Mountain is also a stop on the Alabama Birding Trails, attracting birders hoping to spot a variety of species in the diverse forest habitat. Primitive camping is available, and reservations are required.
