Flint River Place: A Glimpse into Antebellum Alabama

Flint River Place, also known as the Moore-Jordan-Busbin Mansion, stands as a testament to Alabama's rich history. Built between 1844 and 1850 by Daniel Friend, a planter from Kentucky, this historic residence showcases a blend of architectural styles, primarily Greek Revival, with Federal and Georgian Revival elements.The house began as an L-shaped structure, later expanded in 1930 with an additional ell and one-story shed-roofed infill. The exterior is clad in poplar siding, and the roof, originally slate over wooden shingles, has been replaced with asphalt shingles. The facade features three bays and a one-story portico supported by four columns, which replaced an earlier two-column portico in 1978. The main entrance is adorned with sidelights and a fanlight, while most windows are six-over-nine sashes.Flint River Place was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1981 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. While the house suffered significant damage in a 2012 fire, it remains a significant example of antebellum architecture in Madison County. The surrounding area offers a tranquil atmosphere, with the Flint River meandering nearby and shady trees adding to the pleasant ambiance.
