Named for Sheldon Toomer, an Auburn halfback and founder of Toomer's Drugs in 1896, it has evolved into a cherished landmark synonymous with Auburn traditions. Toomer's Drugs, a cornerstone of the corner since its founding, is known for its fresh-squeezed lemonade and Auburn memorabilia.The primary source of Toomer's Corner's popularity is the tradition of 'rolling Toomer's Corner'. Following Auburn victories, fans flock to the corner to throw toilet paper onto the oak trees, creating a sea of white. The tradition began in the 1960s when Toomer's Drugs was the only establishment in town with a telegraph. Employees would share news of Auburn victories by throwing ticker tape onto the power lines. Over time, ticker tape was replaced by toilet paper, and the tradition evolved to include the oak trees.The original oak trees, planted between 1937 and 1939, were poisoned in 2010. Although the original trees did not survive, the tradition continued with new trees planted in 2015 and again in 2017 after the first replacements were burned. The corner has been redesigned to enhance pedestrian flow and safety, including an 'X-crossing' that allows pedestrians to cross in any direction while vehicle traffic is stopped. Toomer's Corner embodies Auburn's unique spirit, history, and identity, making it a must-see destination for visitors.
