Getting There

    From Birmingham, take US-280 East towards Childersburg. Follow US-280 E until you see signs for Oak Mountain State Park. Turn onto John Findlay Drive and follow it to the park's front gate. Parking is available throughout the park, but it's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, as lots can fill up quickly. The entrance fee is $5 per adult. Additional parking is available at the new Belcher Tract entrance off Highway 280. The new entry gate is on Belcher Drive off Highway 280, across from North Shelby Baptist Church. The fee is $5 per car at the gate's cashless kiosk.

The front gate of Oak Mountain State Park welcomes visitors to a sprawling natural playground encompassing nearly 10,000 acres of diverse landscapes. Established in 1927, the park has grown from its original 940 acres to become Alabama's largest state park. It offers a wide array of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, swimming, fishing, and golf. Visitors can explore over 100 miles of trails, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs, with stunning views from overlooks like King's Chair. The park also features three lakes for swimming, boating, and fishing, as well as attractions like the Alabama Wildlife Center and the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center. Oak Mountain State Park has a rich history, with remnants of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects from the 1930s and 40s still visible throughout the park. The park was even considered as a potential National Park in the early 1930s. Today, it continues to evolve, hosting numerous events and adding new facilities to enhance the visitor experience.
