    Discover more about Fort Pickens

Fort Pickens, located on the western tip of Santa Rosa Island, stands as a testament to military engineering and a silent witness to American history. Completed in 1834, this massive pentagonal brick fortress was the largest of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay and its important navy yard. Named after American Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens, the fort showcases the Third System of Fortifications, incorporating advanced coastal defense designs. Constructed with over 21.5 million bricks, much of the work was carried out by enslaved laborers. Its five walls, designed to unleash a ring of fire, could accommodate up to 200 cannons. Fort Pickens played a crucial role during the Civil War, remaining one of the few Southern forts under Union control throughout the conflict. Despite repeated Confederate threats, the fort stood strong, protecting the harbor. In the late 19th century, Fort Pickens briefly served as a prison for the Apache war chief Geronimo and other members of his band. Thousands flocked to see the legendary warrior during his internment, turning the fort into an unlikely tourist attraction. Although new military technologies eventually rendered Fort Pickens obsolete, the Army continued to use the fort until the end of World War II. Today, Fort Pickens is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, offering visitors a chance to explore its historic structures, enjoy recreational activities, and connect with nature.
