Pine Beach Trail: Coastal Dune Ecosystem
Hike through maritime forests and over dunes to a pristine Gulf Coast beach within Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.
Pine Beach Trail provides hikers with a unique opportunity to explore the diverse ecosystems of Alabama's Gulf Coast. Located within the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, whose name means 'safe harbor' in French, the trail offers a sanctuary for a variety of plant and animal species. Established in 1980, the refuge encompasses approximately 7,000 acres, playing a vital role in protecting migratory birds, nesting sea turtles, and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. The 3.5-mile out-and-back trail presents a moderate challenge, rewarding hikers with stunning views and a tranquil escape. The trail begins near a shady dirt parking area. As you venture further, the landscape gradually shifts from a pine forest to a stunted live oak maritime forest. An observation deck overlooks Gator Lake, offering a chance to spot alligators and various bird species. The trail narrows, becoming a levee separating Gator Lake from a brackish water basin. The path leads into the back dunes, winding through towering dunes as you approach the beach. Rope marks guide hikers, protecting the fragile dunes and nesting areas. Cresting the final dune reveals a panorama of the Gulf of Mexico. The refuge is home to over 360 species of birds. The trail is also known for the unique experience of having a saltwater lagoon on one side and a freshwater lake on the other.
