Discover more about Bluff Hall

Bluff Hall, located in Demopolis, Alabama, stands as a testament to the opulence and complexities of life in the antebellum South. Constructed in 1832 by Allen Glover as a wedding gift for his daughter, Sarah Serena Glover, and her husband, Francis Strother Lyon, this historic home offers visitors a unique glimpse into the lives of a prominent planter family and the architectural trends of the era. Francis Strother Lyon was a prominent lawyer and politician in West Alabama, and his family played a significant role in the region's development. Originally built in the Federal style, Bluff Hall underwent significant renovations in the 1840s, transforming it into a grand example of Greek Revival architecture. The house features a two-story brick structure covered in stucco, with a front portico boasting six two-story square columns. Inside, the double parlor showcases columns that were an anniversary gift to the Lyons from the Whitfield family, who resided nearby at Gaineswood. The Marengo County Historical Society acquired the property in 1967, meticulously restoring and preserving Bluff Hall and opening it to the public as a museum. Visitors can explore the house's period clothing, Empire and Victorian furniture, and a collection of artifacts. Behind Bluff Hall, a reconstructed log cabin offers a glimpse into the lives of the early settlers of Demopolis. The grounds also feature a gazebo and a gift shop in the converted carriage house. Bluff Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
