Fendall Hall, also known as the Young–Dent Home, stands as one of Alabama's most outstanding examples of Italianate architecture. Completed in 1860 by Edward Brown Young, a New York native who made his fortune in banking and cotton brokerage, the house reflects the prosperity and elegance of Eufaula during its heyday as a river commerce town.The two-story wood-frame structure boasts a symmetrical villa-type floor plan, crowned by a cupola, and is surrounded by five acres of gardens. The exterior remains largely unchanged, while the interior has been meticulously restored to reflect the period between 1880 and 1916, showcasing the occupancy of Young's daughter, Anna Beall Young, and her husband, Stouten Hubert Dent.Inside, visitors can marvel at the elaborate wall and ceiling murals in the entrance hall, parlor, and dining room, considered among the finest in the country. Other striking features include black-and-white Italian marble entry, eight carved Italian marble fireplace surrounds, Baccarat crystal chandeliers, and Bohemian cut glass pocket doors. The home is filled with family and period furnishings, offering a glimpse into the lives of five generations of the Young family.Today, Fendall Hall is owned by the Alabama Historical Commission and operated by the Friends of Fendall Hall. As a historic house museum, it offers guided tours, allowing visitors to explore the rooms, admire the architecture, and learn about the history of the house and the Young family. Fendall Hall also hosts events, meetings, and is available for rentals.
