Getting There

  • Driving

    From downtown Auburn, head south on College Street (Shell Toomer Pkwy) for approximately 3 miles. Chewacla State Park will be on your left. Parking is available throughout the park near the lake, trails, and campgrounds. Expect to pay an entrance fee of $4 per person (ages 12-61), $2 for children (ages 4-11) and seniors (62+).

    While there is no direct public transportation to Chewacla State Park, you can take an Uber or Lyft from Auburn University or downtown Auburn. Chewacla State Park, located a short drive from Auburn and Opelika, Alabama, encompasses 696 acres of scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. The park's history dates back to the late 1800s when Wright's Mill operated in the area, its pool becoming a local swimming spot. In 1935, the federal government established a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp, whose workers constructed many of the park's enduring features. The state officially opened Chewacla State Park in 1939. Lake Chewacla, a 26-acre lake formed by a dam built by the CCC, is the park's centerpiece, offering swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating. Anglers can cast for bream, bass, crappie, and catfish. A swimming area with a diving platform is open year-round. Visitors can bring canoes and kayaks for hand-launching. The park boasts over 25 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, with options for all skill levels. The trail system was designated a National Recreation Trail in 2011. The Sweet Shrub Trail offers a short, interpretive walk, while trails like Falls View and Creek View provide scenic views and challenging terrain. Mountain bikers can enjoy trails constructed by the Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers (CAMP). Chewacla's six stone cottages, built by the CCC in the 1930s, have been renovated and are available for rental. The park also offers 36 full-hookup camping sites and 10 primitive sites. Picnic areas with tables, grills, and shelters are scattered throughout the park. Visitors may spot wildlife such as squirrels, chipmunks, red foxes, deer, and turkeys. Unique rock formations and native flora and fauna add to the park's natural appeal. Nearby attractions include Toomer's Corner, Tuskegee National Forest, and the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.
