Discover more about Mardis Mill Falls

Mardis Mill Falls is a captivating natural attraction located near Blountsville, Alabama. The falls, also known as Graves Creek Falls, cascade over sandstone ledges into a serene pool, creating a picturesque setting for visitors. The area is popular for swimming, bouldering, and hiking along the riverbed. Historically, the site was home to Mardis Mill, built by Sam Mardis, which operated before and during the Civil War. It was one of the earliest grist mills in Blount County, serving as a community hub where families gathered for picnics. A government-owned still also produced brandy from locally grown apples nearby. Today, Mardis Mill Falls is a place of natural beauty and recreational value. The Freshwater Land Trust acquired the property in December 2024 and is known as a vigilant caretaker. Friends of the Locust Fork River (FLFR) has also been caring for the falls since 2017, with ongoing efforts including trash collection and water quality testing. The property is home to the federally endangered Black Warrior waterdog, a salamander species found only in the Black Warrior River basin, making conservation efforts critical. Visitors can enjoy the short hike down to the falls and explore the rocky river bed. The swimming area has some shallow areas and boulders, so caution is advised. Despite being close to both Birmingham and Huntsville, Mardis Mill Falls offers a peaceful escape into nature.
