Discover more about Fame Recording Studios

FAME Recording Studios stands as a monument to American music history. Founded by Rick Hall in the late 1950s, initially in Florence, Alabama, as Florence Alabama Music Enterprises, it moved to its current location in Muscle Shoals in 1961 and became FAME Recording Studios. This unassuming building became the epicenter of the Muscle Shoals sound, a unique blend of soul, R&B, and rock and roll that captivated the world. FAME's success stemmed from Hall's vision and the incredible talent of the session musicians, known as the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section or the Swampers. These musicians, along with Hall, created a welcoming and racially integrated environment where artists could freely express themselves. This atmosphere fostered groundbreaking recordings by artists such as Aretha Franklin, who credited her time at FAME for her transformation into the Queen of Soul. Wilson Pickett, Etta James, and many others also found their sound within these walls. Today, FAME Recording Studios remains a working studio, attracting new generations of artists while also offering tours to visitors. The studio has been added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can explore the historic Studios A and B, Rick Hall's office, and view exhibits showcasing FAME's rich history and impressive collection of awards. A backstage tour even grants access to FAME's Publishing Office and exhibits focused on instruments played in historic sessions. A sign above the entryway reads: “Through these doors walk the finest Musicians, Songwriters, Artists, and Producers in the World”.
