Fort Gaines, located on the eastern tip of Dauphin Island, Alabama, has guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay for over 150 years. Construction on the fort began in 1821 as part of the Third System plan to strengthen the country's seacoast defenses. Beset by problems, including flooding, the fort was rebuilt between 1853 and 1862. Full speed ahead!".Today, Fort Gaines is a well-preserved historic site offering a glimpse into the past. Visitors can explore the ramparts, original cannons, a blacksmith shop, kitchens, a museum, and tunnels. Living history tours, often including cannon firing and blacksmithing demonstrations, bring the fort's history to life. Exhibits include the anchor from the USS Hartford, Admiral Farragut's flagship. However, Fort Gaines faces an ongoing threat from shoreline erosion and has been named as one of America's Most Endangered Historic Sites.
