Discover more about Flagg Mountain

Flagg Mountain, rising 1,152 feet above sea level in Coosa County, Alabama, marks the southern end of the Appalachian Mountain chain. More than just a scenic destination, it's a testament to the enduring legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the spirit of community-driven restoration. In the 1930s, the CCC set out to transform Flagg Mountain into a state park, constructing log cabins, a dining hall, and the iconic 52-foot stone fire tower. Though the park never fully materialized, the structures remained, testaments to the CCC's craftsmanship. After years of neglect, dedicated volunteers and organizations have breathed new life into the mountain, making it a popular destination for hikers, campers, and bird watchers. The mountain boasts over 7 miles of interconnected trails, including an ADA-accessible path to the summit. As the southern terminus of the 335-mile Pinhoti Trail, Flagg Mountain also serves as the gateway to the Eastern Continental Trail, a 5,400-mile route stretching from Key West, Florida, to Cape Gaspe, Canada. The renovated fire tower offers 360-degree views of the surrounding Coosa and Tallapoosa River valleys and the Talladega Mountains. Visitors can also explore the historic cabins and enjoy the unique montane longleaf pine ecosystem.
