The Huntsville Museum of Art, established in 1970, serves as a cultural magnet in downtown Huntsville's Big Spring International Park. The museum's mission is to connect people and art through the acquisition, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of high-quality works. The museum's 75,034-square-foot facility includes fourteen galleries spanning 20,000 square feet. The original building opened in 1998, and the Davidson Center for the Arts expansion in 2010 added seven more galleries. The Stender Family Interactive Education Galleries feature an Escher-esque color wheel and "A Walk Through Time," which explores ancient cultures and art. The permanent collection comprises over 3,200 objects, primarily focusing on 19th and 20th-century American art, with an emphasis on art from the Southeast. The museum also holds African, Asian, and European art that influenced American artists. Highlights include graphic works by James McNeill Whistler, John French Sloan, Joseph Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol. The museum also boasts a collection of animal figures made from silver and Italian jewelry produced by Gianmaria Buccellati. The Sellars Collection of Art by American Women showcases the achievements of over 250 female artists active between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The museum hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions, including prestigious traveling exhibits and the work of nationally and regionally acclaimed artists. Past exhibitions have included "A Taste for Splendor: Russian Imperial and European Treasures from the Hillwood Museum" and "Land of the Winged Horsemen: Art in Poland".
