Discover more about Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park is more than just a beach; it's a sprawling natural oasis encompassing 6,150 acres of diverse ecosystems along the Gulf of Mexico. Established in 1939, the park's origins trace back to the 1930s when local landowners and the U.S. government donated land, and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed its initial facilities. The park boasts over two miles of pristine, sugar-white beaches, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and building sandcastles. Inland, visitors can explore a variety of habitats, including marshlands, pine forests, and three spring-fed freshwater lakes, the largest of which is Lake Shelby. This 900-acre lake is ideal for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, an award-winning, 28+ mile paved trail system, winds through the park's diverse ecosystems. These trails are perfect for hiking, biking, and Segway tours, offering opportunities to spot local wildlife, including alligators and bobcats. The park also features a nature center with interactive exhibits, a learning campus, and an interpretive center, providing educational experiences for all ages. Anglers can cast a line from the Gulf State Park Fishing and Education Pier, the largest pier on the Gulf of Mexico. The pier offers ample fishing space, a retail store, concessions, and shaded seating. For those seeking overnight accommodations, Gulf State Park offers a range of options, from RV and tent camping at the campground to cabins and cottages along Lake Shelby, and The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a Hilton Hotel. Gulf State Park is also a place of historical significance, with sand and shell mounds built by indigenous peoples between AD 150 and 1500. These mounds serve as reminders of the area's rich cultural heritage and are protected within the park.
