The Patriarchal Monastery of Peć, located at the entrance of the Rugova Canyon near Peja, stands as a testament to Serbian history and Orthodox Christian heritage. Founded in the 13th century, it served as the residence of Serbian Archbishops and Patriarchs, becoming a spiritual and cultural hub. The complex comprises four interconnected churches, each boasting unique architectural styles and artistic treasures. The oldest, the Church of the Holy Apostles, was built in the 13th century by Archbishop Arsenije I, successor to Saint Sava. Subsequent additions include the Church of St. Demetrius (1320s), the Church of the Holy Virgin Hodegetria, and the Church of St. Nicholas (both 1330s). The walls are covered in well-preserved frescoes that depict biblical scenes and Serbian saints, showcasing a history of medieval wall painting styles. Pećka Patrijaršija served as the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church for centuries and as a mausoleum for Serbian archbishops and patriarchs. Despite challenges throughout history, including periods of abandonment and restoration, the monastery remains an active spiritual center with a sisterhood of nuns dedicated to its preservation. Today, it stands as a symbol of Serbian identity and a UNESCO World Heritage site, drawing visitors with its beauty, history, and spiritual significance.
