Discover more about Archaeological Museum of Apolonia

Step back in time at the Archaeological Museum of Apolonia, nestled in a 14th-century former monastery in Pojan, near Fier, Albania. Established in 1958, the museum showcases a vast collection of artifacts excavated from the ancient city of Apolonia, one of the most important archaeological sites in Albania. Apolonia was founded in 588 BC by Greek colonists and thrived for centuries under both Greek and Roman rule. The city's strategic location along the Via Egnatia trade route contributed to its prosperity. The museum's exhibits offer insights into the lives of the Illyrians, Greeks, and Romans who once inhabited this area, displaying mosaics, statues, pottery, and ancient coins. The museum complex includes seven pavilions, a gallery, and two porticos. The main collection is housed in six rooms on the ground floor, displaying artifacts arranged chronologically and thematically to represent various aspects of the city's culture and history. The statuary portico features large marble sculptures, while the refectory contains in-situ frescoes and mosaics. Highlights of a visit include the Monastery of Saint Mary, adjacent to the museum, with its beautiful Byzantine church. Although the monastery was constructed using stones from the ancient city, causing some damage to the archaeological site, it remains a significant historical landmark. The museum's collection of over 688 objects and numerous ancient coins makes it one of the richest in Albania. Allow ample time to explore both the museum and the extensive archaeological site, where you can wander through the ruins of temples, public buildings, and private residences. The site is open daily, with varying hours depending on the season.
