Osumi Canyon, or Kanioni i Osumit, is a 26-kilometer-long river gorge in southern Albania, celebrated as one of the country's most spectacular natural attractions. Formed over two to three million years ago by the Osumi River, the canyon boasts towering cliffs that narrow to just 1.5 meters in some sections, expanding to 35 meters at the cliff tops.
The canyon's unique ecosystem thrives year-round, showcasing Mediterranean vegetation, diverse flora and fauna, and small caves carved by natural forces. Rock formations such as the Cathedral, the Eye, and the Demon's Door add to the canyon's allure, each bearing names inspired by local legends.
During the spring, high water levels from melting snow create ideal conditions for rafting, while summer offers opportunities for river hiking and swimming in natural pools. The nearby town of Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provides a cultural counterpoint with its Ottoman architecture and historic neighborhoods. Public Transport
From Berat, take a bus to Çorovodë. Buses run regularly, and the fare is approximately 200 Lek (about $2 USD). From Çorovodë, hire a taxi or find a local minibus to the Osumi Canyon viewpoint. The taxi ride should cost around 1500-2000 Lek (approximately $15-20 USD).
Walking
If you arrive in the village of Dhorës via public transport, you can walk to the Osumi Canyon viewpoint. The walk is about 3 km and takes approximately 40 minutes. Head south on the main road, taking the left path at the fork, which leads uphill. Follow the signs towards Osumi Canyon. Be aware that the path can be steep, so wear appropriate footwear.
