The original Roman fortification, Mansio Scampis, dates back to the 4th century AD and was situated along the Via Egnatia, a crucial Roman road.The castle's history is layered, reflecting various periods of settlement and rule. After the Roman era, the site was abandoned until the Ottomans revived it, transforming it into a military garrison. Sultan Mehmed II ordered the restoration, resulting in a formidable fortress with 26 equidistant towers, each standing 9 meters high.
