Elbasan Castle: A Journey Through Time

Elbasan Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a captivating historical site in the city of Elbasan, Albania. This 15th-century fortress, erected by the Ottoman Turks in 1466, was strategically constructed on the foundations of earlier Roman and Byzantine structures. The original Roman fortification, Mansio Scampis, dates back to the 4th century AD and was situated along the Via Egnatia, a crucial Roman road.The castle's history is layered, reflecting various periods of settlement and rule. After the Roman era, the site was abandoned until the Ottomans revived it, transforming it into a military garrison. Sultan Mehmed II ordered the restoration, resulting in a formidable fortress with 26 equidistant towers, each standing 9 meters high. Within the castle walls, you can still find Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, a well-preserved 19th-century attraction.Today, Elbasan Castle is open to the public, inviting visitors to explore its ancient walls and discover remnants of the past. The Castle Neighborhood within the walls harmoniously blends history with modern life, featuring Ottoman-style houses, Italian-style flats, and buildings from the communist and post-communist eras.
