Petrela Castle, located in the village of Petrelë, is a captivating historical site a short distance from Tirana. With origins tracing back to the 6th century AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the castle stands 329 meters above sea level. The present structure largely dates back to the 15th century. Strategically positioned, Petrela Castle was part of a signaling and defense network with Krujë Castle; fires were used to communicate between the castles. During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, the castle was commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister, adding to its historical significance. The castle has a triangular shape with two observation towers. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy views of the Erzen valley, rolling hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains.
