Rising dramatically from a rocky outcrop, Petrelë Castle (Kalaja e Petrelës) stands as a proud sentinel overlooking the Erzen Valley. Just 15 kilometers south of Tirana, in the village of Petrelë, this historic castle offers visitors a unique blend of Albania's rich past and stunning natural beauty. Originally constructed in the 6th century AD by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, as part of a network of fortifications, the castle played a crucial role in controlling the road to the Via Egnatia. The present structure largely dates back to the 15th century, showcasing a triangular shape with two prominent towers. During Skanderbeg's fight against the Ottomans, it was commanded by his sister, Mamica Kastrioti. The castles signaled each other danger and the encroachment of invaders using fire. Legend says that the beautiful girl Elena lived in the castle and disappeared mysteriously. Today, Petrelë Castle is a popular tourist destination, offering not only a journey through history but also breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. A restaurant within the castle walls allows visitors to savor traditional Albanian cuisine while soaking in the panoramic vistas.
