Founded in the 4th century BC by the Illyrian tribe of Bylliones, Byllis was the largest city in Southern Illyria and a significant center during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The city's strategic location on a plateau 547 meters above sea level provided a dominant view of the Vjosa River valley and surrounding mountains.As you wander through the 30-hectare park, you'll discover impressive ruins that reveal the city's rich history and cultural significance. The well-preserved city walls, stretching over 2 kilometers, once enclosed a vibrant urban center. Explore the remains of the theater, which could seat up to 7,500 spectators, and imagine the lively performances that once took place here. Visit the stadium, one of the best-preserved in the country, and envision the athletic competitions that drew crowds in ancient times.Byllis also holds religious importance, as evidenced by the ruins of several large Palaeo-Christian basilicas constructed during the reign of Emperor Justinian. These basilicas feature lavishly decorated mosaics, showcasing the city's role as a bishopric within the Eastern Orthodox Church. Although Byllis was sacked by foreign invaders in 586 AC and subsequently abandoned, its legacy lives on through the remarkable archaeological remains.
