Discover more about Elbasan Castle

Elbasan Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is more than just a fortress; it's a living chronicle of Elbasan's vibrant history. Its story begins in the 4th century AD when it was first established as a Roman castrum called Mansio Scampis, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. This strategic location along the Via Egnatia, the vital Roman road connecting the Adriatic coast to Byzantium, made it a crucial military and trade hub. Over the centuries, the castle witnessed the rise and fall of empires. After the Roman era, it saw periods of abandonment and reconstruction. In the 6th century, Emperor Justinian I reinforced its defenses, recognizing its continued strategic importance. However, it was in 1466 that the castle took on its current form when Sultan Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire rebuilt it as a garrison town during his campaigns against the Albanian hero, Skanderbeg. The Ottomans named it 'Ijl-basan,' meaning 'the owned fortress,' which eventually evolved into Elbasan. For over four centuries, it served as the seat of the Sanjak of Elbasan, becoming a center of Ottoman administration and culture. Within its walls, a diverse community thrived, leaving behind a legacy of architectural styles, from Ottoman-era houses to 19th and 20th-century Italianate buildings. Today, Elbasan Castle is a vibrant neighborhood where the past seamlessly blends with the present. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ramparts, climb the defensive towers, and wander through the labyrinthine alleys. Notable landmarks within the castle include Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, an early 19th-century structure, the King Mosque (Sultan Bayezid Mosque), and the Orthodox Church of St. Mary, showcasing the religious tolerance that has long been a hallmark of Albanian cities. Enclosing more than two thousand houses within its walls, the castle boasted a manufacturing industry of over 900 shops, crafting and exporting products of leather, silk, and precious metals like silver.
