Discover more about Kalaja e Lëkurësit

Kalaja e Lëkurësit, perched on a strategic hill overlooking Sarandë, is a testament to Albania's rich and turbulent past. Constructed in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the castle was built to protect the region from Venetian incursions and control the harbor of Saranda. The castle held a garrison of 220 soldiers. The castle's almost square shape features two round towers at opposite corners, offering loopholes for defense. From its vantage point, visitors can see Sarandë, Butrint, and the Straits of Corfu. In the late 18th century, Ali Pasha of Ioannina attacked the castle, and the surrounding habitation was raided. The village of Lëkurës, once located on the western slope of the hill, was abandoned in 1878. Today, Kalaja e Lëkurësit is a must-visit destination, offering not only a glimpse into history but also stunning views. The castle is open to the public, and nearby restaurants and cafes provide a place to relax and savor traditional Albanian cuisine while enjoying the vistas.
