The Kamenica Tumulus, located near the village of Kamenicë in Korçë County, is a significant archaeological site that offers a window into Albania's prehistoric past. This ancient burial ground, dating back to the Bronze Age (13th century BC), is one of the largest of its kind in the Balkans, with over 400 individual tombs discovered. Excavations at the site have revealed a wealth of information about the people who lived in this region thousands of years ago. Archaeologists have uncovered over 440 skeletons and 3,500 artifacts, including ceramics, weapons, and ornaments made from bronze, iron, silver, gold, amber, and bone. One notable discovery was the skeleton of a pregnant woman with her unborn child, dating back to 3000 BC. The central grave, dating back to the Bronze Age, is surrounded by two large concentric circles, a unique feature compared to other tumuli in Albania. The tumulus expanded over the centuries, growing to 40 graves in the Late Bronze Age and 200 in the Early Iron Age. The site also features a museum with exhibits detailing the history of the excavations and the artifacts found. Of particular interest is an illustration of cranial surgery performed in the 6th century BC, showcasing the advanced medical knowledge of the community. The museum also displays two replica graves with original remains. The Kamenica Tumulus not only illustrates death, but also informs about life, social relationships, technological achievements, cultural contacts and exchanges of this prehistoric community.
