    From Fier, drive west towards the village of Pojan. Follow the signs to Apollonia Archaeological Park. Parking is available near the entrance. Note that the road leading directly to the gate might be closed, requiring a short walk uphill from the lower parking lot.

    Taxi

    Taxis are available from Fier to Apollonia. Negotiate the fare before starting your journey. A return trip with a waiting time of 2 hours may cost around 2,000 Lek (€17). ALBES Taxis in Fier is a reliable option.

    Bus

    Take a bus from Tirana, Vlorë, or Durrës to Fier. From Fier's bus station, inquire about transportation to Pojan. From Pojan, it's approximately a 20-minute walk to the archaeological site, following clearly marked signs.

Founded in 588 BC by Greek colonists, the city flourished for over a thousand years, becoming a significant urban center in the region. Named after the god Apollo, Apollonia grew prosperous due to its strategic location and harbor. At its peak, the city boasted a population of around 60,000 and was encircled by a stone wall stretching up to five kilometers.Under Roman rule, Apollonia continued to thrive, becoming an important outpost along the Via Egnatia trade route. The city attracted scholars, philosophers, and even Roman emperors, with Octavian Augustus, the first Roman emperor, studying here. However, a devastating earthquake in the 4th century AD altered the course of the Vjosa River, leading to the silting up of the harbor and the city's eventual decline and abandonment.Today, visitors can explore the extensive archaeological park, discovering remnants of temples, an Odeon theater, a library, and Roman villas adorned with mosaics. The on-site Archaeological Museum, housed in a beautifully preserved Byzantine monastery, showcases a remarkable collection of artifacts unearthed from the site.
