Byllis Archaeological Park: An Illyrian Jewel

Byllis Archaeological Park, located near Hekal in Albania, invites visitors to step back in time and explore the remnants of a significant ancient city. Founded by the Illyrians in the 4th century BC, Byllis thrived as a major center in Southern Illyria and remained important through Roman and Byzantine rule. Legend says that the city was established by Neoptolemus, the son of Achilles, dating back to the 11th century BC, though archaeological evidence suggests a later origin between 370-350 BC. Covering 30 hectares, the park features impressive ruins, including a theater that once seated 7,500 spectators, offering insights into the city's vibrant cultural life. The remains of several basilicas, adorned with lavish mosaics, highlight Byllis's importance as a religious center during the 5th century AD. The city's walls, stretching 2250 meters, enclose an area that provides stunning views of the Vjosë River valley and surrounding mountains. Visitors can explore the foundations of the city walls, the partially restored theater used for modern cultural events, and the remnants of the basilicas. The park also houses a museum with artifacts like pottery, coins, and sculptures, enriching the historical context.
