Getting there

Walking

From the center of Lezhë, head north on Rruga Skënderbeu, then turn left onto Rruga Varosh. Follow Rruga Varosh, and the castle will be on your right. The walk takes about 20 minutes, but be prepared for some inclines. Ensure you have comfortable footwear.

Public Transport

From the Razma Region, take a local bus or minibus toward Lezhë. These buses typically stop at Lezhë's main bus station. From there, you can walk to the castle in about 15-20 minutes or take a taxi for approximately 300-500 Albanian Lek.

Car

From Tirana, head north on the SH1 highway towards Lezhë. As you approach Lezhë, follow signs directing you to Lezhë Castle. The castle is located at QMM2+F2X, Rruga Varosh, Lezhë 4501, Albania. Parking is available near the castle entrance. Be mindful of parking regulations.

Lezhë Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Lezhës, stands as a testament to Albania's layered past, with its foundations dating back to ancient Illyrian times. The castle's strategic position on a hill dominating the city of Lezhë has made it a focal point for various powers throughout history.Originally an Illyrian fortification, the castle was later rebuilt by the Venetians in 1440 and subsequently by the Ottomans in 1522, each leaving their architectural mark. The League of Lezhë, a pivotal moment in Albanian history where Skanderbeg united Albanian lords against the Ottoman Empire, was held here in 1444. Exploring the castle grounds reveals remnants of Ottoman buildings, a mosque, a Roman-arched tower, and an Illyrian tower, showcasing a blend of Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman influences.Visitors can wander through the castle's ruins, taking in the panoramic views of the Drin River, the Lezhë plain, and the Adriatic coast. The castle is open daily, inviting tourists to immerse themselves in the serene atmosphere and discover the echoes of Albania's storied past.
